D. Barbalace: AE 510 - Intelligent Building Introduction

D. Barbalace:  AE 510 - Intelligent Building Introduction

Hey everyone!  I'm a Senior looking to get a dual degree in Civil and Architectural Engineering.  The majority of my experience with intelligent building comes from my last two co-op experiences.  During my time at South State, Inc. (a general contractor working on the NJ Turnpike Widening Project) I used seismic sensors near areas where either heavy demolition of existing structures or pile driving were taking place.  The sensors allowed us to ensure that nearby structures and soil conditions would not be damaged by the work.  I finished my third co-op at CHOP.  A large part of my job there was maintaining and improving the existing drawing database.  I also used AutoCAD to help end users (doctors/nurses) visualize the intended outcomes of projects.  The drawings were then used by contractors to renovate existing spaces within the hospital.

I expect to learn a lot about BIM in this class.  I think using BIM early on in construction projects is essential in streamlining the process.  I'd also like to learn a lot about currently developing robotic systems used in building functions.

Intelligent Building - Using various technologies to maximize the efficiency of all stages of a building's life cycle, including Design, Construction, Use, Renovation, and Demolition.
