Our group discussed the improvement made in the robotics field and the possible applications in the world of Intelligent Building. Overarching themes were increased efficiency in the maintenance of the building and improved safety for the users. Dave specifically talked about the possibility of using robots for janitorial task. He pointed out that robots are already being used in that sense, but that there is a much bigger market for them. They could be used for cleaning chemical spills, or cleaning spaces impossible to reach for humans. Nameita also discussed maintenance, but focused on the building skin. Like Dave, she talked about the way robots could be used for the continual upkeep of building envelope. She also touched upon the possibilities of using robots to make the skin more responsive to external conditions. Yoon talked about the use of robots for construction. He noted the fact that they would have unlimited access to the construction site, speed up construction, and increase safety for the workers. Yoon was pessimistic about the capabilities of robots as construction instrument because of the limiting weight they can carry.
Overall we are really optimistic about the use of robots in building.
