A building consists of materials and components that combine to meet the needs of its occupants. By implementing computer technology, building performance, efficiency, and control is increased. The potential and demand for these technologies is vast and shows exponential growth for the future.

Computer technology in buildings depends on a variety of different things and work in tandem with sensors to provide comfortable and safe environments for its occupants. Time based controls along with optimization controls provide heating or lighting only when needed and ensure expected temperatures are met regardless of unforeseen conditions. Examples of this include temperature control, compensating systems, lighting zones and lighting time control. Temperature control allows occupants to set a temperature and know that it will be met even with the influences of outdoor conditions. Lighting zones and time control can be set so the lights only engage during peak hours and turn off when the building is not occupied .When all examples are employed energy savings and environmental benefits can be seen through all building systems and quantified with the buildings computer technology.

With the widespread adoption of computer technology in residential and commercial buildings, integration into our everyday lives will continue to grow and only increase the demand for new and innovative computer technologies in buildings.
