The article I read that tells me BIM software has a great
influence on visualization. It is a useful tool to provide a three dimensional
virtual representation of the building. The designers and construction manager
can use BIM to display walkthroughs, renderings and sequencing of model in 3D
virtual view. This concept is combining different traditional 2D views and
become a 3D view in detail. Therefor, BIM can give us a better understanding of
what the final product may look like. The one typical software is the Google
Sketchup, which easily transfer 2D to 3D virtual view by using different tools
(push, cut, scale…) in this software. It gives us a common idea what the final
model may looks like during the process of the design.
Furthermore, BIM
provides virtual mock-ups to designer and the owner. The mock-up is a scale or
full-size model of a design like laboratories and schools. Besides that,
mock-up can also determine different building envelopes. Participants can
easily communicate and collaborate rely on the mock-ups because it tells you
what is actual design going to look like and what things you need to be careful
with. Therefor, using mock-ups can be a big advantage to visualize
and help making decisions on the functionality of the space and the aesthetics.
Those are the
advantages that BIM can bring to us. However, BIM does have some disadvantages
such as training and software costs. A contractor need to put time and money to
associate with the software like purchasing, licensing and training. In my own
opinion, I think the advantages in BIM are bigger than disadvantages because I
realize that 3D virtual view is a huge contribution from BIM that making us has
a lot of thoughts on the buildings or designs. That is why I like to learn the
BIM software because it can make my design be real.

I totally agree with you that BIM makes the Engineer’s work
easier. I can’t image if engineers don’t have BIM right now how long going to
make them manually draw each situation and calculate the loads. Through your
blog, I realized that BIM bring a lot of benefits to us.

Well written, Andrew. You mentioned that most designers don’t
care about the performance of buildings in the past. I just realized that BIM
gives me the passions on design, and I will care the performance in the end.

Would you happen to know the difference of cost of teaching a contractor to use BIM as opposed to current methods of analyzing drawings? I also think the advantages of using BIM are greater than any disadvantage, you also have to consider that certain BIM software may have higher learning curves.
ReplyDeleteI think the advantage of BIM is not only limited on the building envelope and visualization, but also have advantage of calculations and measurements. These could be important features compare to Google Sketchup.
