Week 2- Future Robotics Capabilities

The Robotics technology has been developed in construction very rapidly in recent years, which helps people collecting data, moving and cleaning components very precisely and safely. Therefor this technology is accepted by most of country. The one major robotics technology has been developed is the Robotic Total Stations( RTS), which requires only a single person to operate and collect dimensional information of the building components. At late 1990s, the only tool for collecting the dimensions is the tape, after that the Electronic Distance Measurement device (EDM) start to be the main tool by using a light wave to travel to a target and get reflected back to calculate the time elapsed. Compare to those two technology, the RTS is quicker and preciser to determine the 3D dimensions than previous two methods by holding the reflector and controls the total station from the observed point with the help of a remote positioning Unit. All the movements are rely on the robot itself, so it is very convenient for human to record the data just by controlling the robot and analysis the results on the BIM system.

Robotic Total Station can record the changing coordinates of a moving target automatically. It can reach out the space people may not get close to it to collecting the data. Further more, the RTS is very accuracy that can be determined in millimeters. This fact is very helpful in measuring the small movements. The most benefit for this technology is only cost one person to control the robot, spend less time in collecting the dimensions and also saves a lot of time in checking the errors because this RTS system is very precise.

This Robotic technology has also been involved into BIM system as well. In further more investigation by applying the BIM system , RTS has the ability to calculate the oscillation frequency of the engineering structures. The goal is to rise the average sampling rate to 10 HZ comparing regional 2 HZ and decreasing the noisy in monitoring static targets. Over all, Robotic Total Station is a great technology to learn and use in the future.
